Translated into the lands of honest men, Burkina Faso has had a tumultuous history. At the start of the 14th century, the territory of Burkina Faso was known as the Mossi Empire. In the end of the 19th century, France had made this territory into a protectorate and turned it into a colony in the 1930s.

Before the name Burkina Faso, it was named by the French as the Upper Volta due to its geographical location to the river Volta. In 1960 it gained independence from France, and became an autonomous republic. However, this only lasted for just over five years when a military coup took place and puts the citizens under military rule.

12 years later, in 1978, Burkina Faso returned to a democracy. This only held for two years when Burkina Faso was plunged back into military coups that lasted for over a decade. At the beginning of the 1990s, Burkina Faso has held official elections which are still held today.
