Comoros

Known for being a volcanic island archipelago as well as being the second largest producer of vanilla in the world, the Comoros has had a tumultuous 20th century. Throughout its history it has been frequently visited by Arab traders which had spread their influence throughout the archipelago. In the second half of the 19th century, France had colonized the Comoros and held on to the territory until 1974 when the population voted for independence. Since its independence, the government of the Comoros had seen more than 20 coups as well as other internal military conflicts. At present, the Comoros still experiences political instability. .

Located at the northern part of the Strait of Mozambique, the archipelago consists of three large islands with the Grand Comore a being the largest followed by Anjouan and Moheli. Even though these islands are formed by a volcanic eruption, the largest part of these islands consists of a lightly forested surface. To the north it is connected to the Indian Ocean. Mayotte, a French overseas department, as well as Madagascar are located in its southeastern direction and to its west it has Mozambique and Tanzania.

It is the 169th largest state in the world with a total surface area of 1871 square kilometers or 723 square miles. This makes the Comoros slightly smaller than Mauritius and slightly larger than Sao Tome and Principe.

There are no known permanent bodies of water in the Comoros.

Below, a graph is shown which displays the absolute amount of water of each state in square kilometers and square miles.

Most of its water comes in the form of rainfall. Because of an inconsistency between rainfalls, most of the population stores this rainwater in tanks or other storage means. This means that the water is prone to become infested with microbes which deteriorate the water quality.

The Comoros experiences a tropical climate due to its proximity to the equator. It seasons are characterized by being dry and cool or warm and humid. It is ranked as the 69th warmest state in the world with an average temperature of 24.6 degrees Celsius or 76.3 degrees Fahrenheit.

The economy of the Comoros is characterized by being an underdeveloped market economy. Almost half of its GDP comes from the agricultural sector and is highly reliant on subsistence farming. Other factors that limited the economic growth are the governmental instability, a large foreign debt and high unemployment rates. In order to counter these problems, the Comoros have requested a debt release at the IMF. Currently, its economic growth is still not as high as surrounding states. Most of its imports come from France Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates while most of its exports goes to France and India which combined make up more than 65 percent of total exports. The main goods that are being exported are vanilla, nuts and natural oils.
