Guinea

Known for having the largest deposits of iron as well as other rare earth minerals, Guinea is full of potential. It is speculated that its name is a corruption of neighbouring Ghana. Before contact with European explorers, the area was dominated by the Susu people which ruled the land until the 16th century. Its first contact with European explorers was with the Portuguese.  Only at the end of the 19th century does France declare Guinea to be a colony of the French Empire and later on part of the west African Federation. Nearly 60 years later, in 1958, Guinea became an independent state and during the Cold War, Guinea politically aligned itself with the Soviet Union. During this period, Guinea experienced political stability. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union, political instability arose and riots between the government and opposition groups have become common. .
