Hungary

Known for its hot springs, thermal spas as well as its world-famous dish, goulash, Hungary has had a tumultuous history. Before the start of the first century, the area was inhabited by various tribes. At the turn of the first century, the area was conquered by the Romans and later on became part of the Byzantine Empire. Following the breakup of the Byzantine Empire, it was invaded by the Mongols and later on by the Ottoman Empire which Incorporated Hungary during the 16th and 17th century. At the turn of the 18th century, Austria defeated the Ottomans and incorporated Hungary into its empire and renamed it into Austria-Hungary. After losing the first world war, Austria and Hungary were broken up and shortly after, large parts of Hungarian territory were awarded to states that were victorious during the first world war. After growing resentment, Hungary joined Nazi Germany in its invasion into Soviet Union in 1941. After being defeated by the Soviet Union, it became part of the Warsaw Pact and aligned itself with the Soviet Union. During the collapse of the Soviet Union, Hungary proclaimed its independence and started making unilateral policies in 1991. Shortly after, in 2004, Hungary joined the European union of which it is still a member today.
