Micronesia

Known in Greek for the words small and island, the Federated States of Micronesia has hosted two major nuclear test sites for the United States. Micronesia was inhabited by the Polynesians that lived as separate the kingdoms. They first came into contact with Spanish and Portuguese explorers in the 16th century and subsequently became a colony of Spain by the 17th century. After Germany purchased Micronesia from Spain at the end of the 19th century, it shortly after became occupied by Japanese forces at the beginning of the 20th century which held the territory until the end of the second world war when it came under the administration of the United States, but gained its full independence in 1986. Since then, Micronesia has remained relatively stable. .
