Known for being the third smallest state in the world as well as having the highest GDP per capita at the end of the 20th century, the Republic of Nauru is one of the least visited states in the world. The island was first inhabited by the Micronesian people which came into contact with Europeans at the end of the 18th century. After being annexed by Germany at the end of the 19th century, large phosphate deposits were discovered which were extracted by the British and the Germans. After the first world war, Nauru came under Australian rule until the second world war when the Japanese occupied the terriroty. After the defeat of the Japanese, Nauru once again came under Australian rule until it gained its independence in 1968. Since then, Nauru has made a large profit of the exports of phosphate, but with the decline of the exports of phosphate, and a lack of economic diversification, political unrest has started to increase during the last two decades.
Located to the northeast of Australia in the Pacific Ocean, Nauru is a small island that is made up of volcanic rock. Most of its terrain consists of a low-lying vegetation, with the exception of a small forest located in its center.
With a total surface area of 21 square kilometers or eight square miles, Nauru is the third smallest state in the world being slightly larger than Monaco and slightly smaller than Tuvalu.

Since its independence, the vast majority of the economy of Nauru has been reliant on the extraction of phosphate which has been used in fertilizers worldwide. Due to economic mismanagement by the government of Nauru, most of the wealth that has been generated by phosphate has been lost due to increased government spending. Following the closure of its phosphate mine in 2006, Nauru has continued the extraction of phosphate more inland.

Chinese immigrants represent approximately three percent of the population of Nauru. Within the Chinese population, most Buddhists can be found which represent 0.8 percent of the population.
