Ukraine

Known for its historical religious sites, its conflict with Russia as well as having one of the largest nuclear disasters in human history, Ukraine has had a central role in eastern European history. Before the Ukrainian state was formed, the area was inhabited by the Slavic people which lived in smaller clans. The southern part of Ukraine was colonized by the Romans and later on by the Byzantines. In the ninth century, the territory of Kievan Rus was created which spanned from Kyiv to St. Petersburg. This Empire expanded rapidly until the invasion of the Mongol Empire which split Kievan Rus into multiple smaller states. After the expulsion of the Mongols, the area of Ukraine was slowly taken over by the Russian Empire and subsequently the Soviet Union. After a brief occupation by Nazi Germany during the second world war, the area once again came under the control of the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991 when Ukraine became fully independent. Since then, Ukraine kept close ties with Russia both politically and economically until a revolution in 2014 which broke political ties with Russia and shifted its alignment with Western institutions such as the EU and NATO. In 2022, Russia invaded the territory of Ukraine and of the time of this writing, this conflict is still ongoing.

Located in Eastern Europe, the geography of Ukraine varies heavily with a high mountain range to its west, a flat plane in its center and low mountains to its east.
