Being named after Venice and known for its waterfalls, Venezuela, or the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has had large economic hardships over the last decades. Before contact with Europeans, the area was inhabited by the Timoto-Cuica people, which had an ancient civilization. After coming into contact with Spanish explorers by the end of the 15th century, the area started to become colonized at the start of the 16th century.
